Greetings to you from Minneapolis! By the time you read this I may not actually be in Minneapolis, I may be in Africa. This long awaited trip is coming really fast. Just in case you didn’t know or don’t remember what this trip is all about I will tell you. I am going to Ethiopia for 2 weeks to visit a good friend, then I will be in Kenya for 5 days to visit an orphanage, then I will spend 2 months in Malawi. The orphanage in Kenya is one that is in need of food. This is probably the most dangerous part of my whole trip. This orphanage is located in a rural area of eastern Kenya by Lake Victoria. There is also political unrest in the nation of Kenya, but besides that I don’t really know the people that I will be with. I am sure that I will be fine, but I would really appreciate prayer for this. I hope to be able to send food to them in the future even though Kenya is a very difficult country to send food to. A friend of mine from another satellite of Feeding Children International recently tried to send a container of food to Kenya but it was confiscated by rebels and warlords. If things continue to be so unsecured then we will not be able to send them food. Please pray for direction and guidance as for what we should do. I would hate to get to this orphanage in Kenya and promise the children food and then not be able to send it to them.
While I am in Malawi I will be working with an organization call Children of the Nations (COTN). I will be helping COTN set up a Service Learning Center where children will be able to come and learn basic hands- on skills such as iron working and bicycle repair. All the tools and things that I sent to them last year are still there and secure in a container.
Just the other day we sent out about 120,000 meals to Malawi which will be distributed by a different organization called Meals for Malawi. I hope to be able to visit this organization while I am in Malawi. I will actually be in the same city as them so it should be pretty easy to visit them. Like COTN Meals for Malawi is a holistic ministry, meaning that they provide everything that the children need- not just food, but also shelter, parents, education and even Bible Instruction.
While I am gone over the summer the contact person for Feeding Children- Steiger Minneapolis will be Kelly Jean Erwin and you can reach her at the same phone number that you have been contacting me at which is (612) 867-7541.
The restaurant that I work at has been really flexible and supportive to me about my going away for the summer. I will be done working there at the end of May but then when I come back at the end of August I can go back to work there and have all the same shifts again that I have been working. What a blessing that is. Thank you so much for all of your prayers and support. Without your help and support I would not be able to be in this ministry!
Heather Young
Please remember to pray for me over the summer
- For my ability to speak Chichewa while I am in Malawi.
- For my safety in the countries that I will be in.
- Unity among the other missionaries that I will be serving with.
- Ability to get the supplies that we will need for blacksmithing and the other projects that we will be working on.
Your prayers and contributions make this ministry possible! |
